Another recommendation from one of Dusty’s colleagues had us visiting Kings Cafe in York for lunch on Saturday at about 3.30pm. The plastic menus and paper napkins soon confirmed its position in our league table of eateries, but we sat down nonetheless. Dusty ordered Eggs Benedict and I ordered the Quiche with Jacket Potato and Salad. Looking after our figures we also plumped for sparkling water instead of our usual weekend tipple of wine.
Waiting for our orders we started to take in a little more of Kings Cafe. The small but pleasantly decorated cafe was clean and airy.
What started to let the place down though was the attitude of the staff and what we guessed was the owner/manager. The waitresses were all of ‘school’ age and the service they provided was fitting. More interested in chatting to their friends who were also dining there for lunch, you started to feel in the way. The owner/manager was not much better, asking a frail elderly gentleman who was heading to the door in a very loud and abrupt voice “Excuse Me! Have you Paid”. The elderly gentleman seemed shocked and quite rightly replied that he had to one of the dippy waitresses.
The waitresses friends who were at the next table were starting to annoy us by now so we moved to get a little peace.
The food arrived and was actually very nice. Both our choices were presented well and were good value for money.
Before settling up though we witnessed another elderly couple being treated with disdain when one of the waitresses asked if they were ready to order, only to be told by the elderly gentleman that they needed a little more time. The look of disgust in the waitress’s eye, by now rolling around her head, was special.
What could be a nice place to stop for good quality value for money food is spoilt by the staff who work there. A pity.
