While I sat having breakfast in my hotel’s soulless restaurant; like many other guests, I ignored everyone making slurping, coughing, grinding noises by reading my paper. The Times reported today that Marks and Spencer are dropping their upmarket “It’s not just food…. It’s Marks and Spencer’s food” advert campaign for one that will be replaced by Dell Boy actor David Jason. I think this is a good thing given the advertising campaign mentioned would have one off two effects on me. Either I would melt into the moment and quickly run to my nearest Marks and Spencer to buy their sticky toffee puddings, or I would shout at the TV and scream about the high calorie and fat content of their ready meals.
Their changing campaign did remind me of my visit to the Marks and Spencer food hall in York on Sunday, where I found many an aisle bereft of customers. A number of cashiers sat looking bored and dare I say a little embarrassed. Maybe they realise that getting back to basics is a good thing in the current climate.
The disappointment I had when I finished reading the article though, is that David Jason will be advertising their ready (restaurant quality – read high fat/calorie) meals. When will they catch up with what is happening and start to sell more healthy food. (Perhaps I need to go on a diet of course!)
