I returned a couple of times this week to Sergio’s on Great Titchfield Street in London.  The first occasion was very enjoyable with good service from the outset.  I went for the vegetable soup starter which had been freshly prepared and served up piping hot with nice warm crusty bread.  For my main I opted for the Sirloin Steak which was cooked just as I had asked and served up with fresh vegetables and salad.  With a decent bottle of Rioja wine, it was a very nice evening.

As a result I returned the following night with some colleagues expecting the same fine food and service. Unfortunately from the outset, the service was atrocious.  We were given a seat outside as requested, but then left for a good twenty minutes before even been asked for our drink order.  I had to remind the waitress that we would like to place our order.  Eventually a tall chap turned up to take our drinks order, which followed about ten minutes later.  Another half hour past with no sign of a food order being taken, so once again I had to walk into the restaurant asking for further service.  A while later our food order was taken.

When the food did arrive, it was, as has been usual in the past, very nice indeed.  This time I opted for an Asparagus starter to be followed by Chicken Sergio and I enjoyed them both.  However when the main was delivered to the table we then had to wait a few moments for cutlery to be offered as the table had been cleared.  No further drinks orders were asked for, so again I had to prompt for this to happen.

During the meal, the heavens opened with thunder, lighting and rain, which given we were covered by outside canopies and warmed by electric heaters, was actually quite good fun.  This part of town is also great for people watching and many an old queen and young twink walked by, which kept me amused.

At the end, we even had to ask for the bill, so on seeing the service charge been automatically added, I asked for it to be taken off, given the poor experience.

I would go back for the food, but if you go, be prepared for very inconsistent service.

Pryordurkin rating. 3 star.
