We quite liked this shop when we first moved to York, especially given we had left behind a fantastic new John Lewis store in Cambridge. However over the last couple of years it has steadily declined in quality and offerings. What used to be a department store selling a good range of goods and providing a good range of services, has slowly descended into a shop made up of many concession stands.
The first to go was the ready made curtain section last year. When we first moved into our house, we spent a small fortune with the friendly, knowledgeable ladies who manned this department, but since then, they have all being made redundant and replaced by a poor imitation concession stand.
Today when we visited the shop looking to buy some decent glassware, we were disappointed to find that this has now closed completely and being replaced by yet another concession stand selling ‘Matalan’ quality clothing for women.
As we left, we started to pine for John Lewis in Cambridge and walking towards Colliergate, just wished they would knock down the poor range of shops there and build a fresh new John Lewis department store.
Pryordurkin rating 2 stars. (dropped 2 stars since moving towards the concession model of retailing)
