P1030498With some encouragement from our neighbours, Paul has decided to enter some of his home made Cakes and home grown Vegetables into Dunnington Village show which takes place this Bank Holiday on Saturday 29th August.

There was quite a selection of categories to chose from, but in the end he chose to enter three fruit categories, one vegetable category and five desert categories which included one home made sweet.  His main priority is to walk away with the Women’s Institute Cup!  Having got home from work quite late today, he has been busy in the kitchen ever since.

Earlier this week, he took his entrance form with a collection of twenty pence pieces to a neighbour who sits on the committee.  Apart from the Women’s Institute Cup, and a rose bowl for some combination of winning a number of classes within a single category, the main prizes on offer are £1.00 for first prize, 50p for second and 25p for third for each category.  I won’t give up the day job just yet, but I remind myself that it is all just about having some fun.

P1030468I have to help take said produce to the judging tent by 11.00am in the morning (it’s a bank holiday and I have to get out of bed early!).  Judging then takes place, before ‘joe public’ are allowed in to view.  What I haven’t been able to establish just yet, is when I can eat any of the cakes he is making, although the recipe for Chocolate Truffles with Cointreau does provide for 40 odd pieces so I may just sneak a few away overnight!

Anyway, as I sit here finishing a bottle of wine, while watching repeats of Poirot on ITV3 while Paul bangs around in the kitchen, I can honestly say, the Bank Holiday weekend has begun.

Have a good  one yourselves and do come back soon to check out how Paul did at Dunnington Village Show.

Update:  Village Show Day @ 4pm.

P1030464Well, with minutes to spare, we dropped the entries off before the cut off point at 11.00am and then headed into town while the judging panel sampled the fayre.  We returned around 1.45pm to find Paul had won 1st Prize for his cake in the Men Only section and came third place for his plums!  The scones didn’t get a place (what were they thinking of?), and the apple pie was disqualified for having sultanas in!  The lemon drizzle cake didn’t get a place either, but to be fair, when we got it home, it was drier than a desert (However I always like it served with custard, so it is just fine by me).

P1030481When it came to the dessert apple section, Paul was robbed! As for his raspberries, well lets just say, we weren’t that surprised they didn’t win.  When it came finally to his parsnips, they failed to get a place either.  It might have been down to the dirt which we didn’t have time to wash off, but apart from that, they looked as good as the first prize winner!  Again, see if you can spot them in the photo gallery.

Nice plums! Sorry, very predictable but I couldn’t help myself. Well done on the first prize, the cake looks scrummy. I didn’t realise Dunnington was such a big village, it looks like the show was well attended.

Lee suggests that next year you enter fairy cakes!
