We took a very short drive from home yesterday to visit York Maize Maze in Elvington near York. We’d heard this place mentioned many times and had even seen it in the news over the last few months for the many special events it holds. The most notorious being the Nudist Night, where people with a particular hobby navigate the Maize Maze in their birthday suits. Upcoming events include Halloween activities and Bonfire night, but by then the Maize Maze itself will have been closed and turned into silage.
However as we discovered yesterday there is a lot more going at York Maize Maze than the Maze itself. The large grounds also house, a cafe, an assortment of kids play areas, including what must be Elvingtons equivalent of a beach, a barn with stage area, motor cart track, mini farm area and a huge picnic area where, in the sun, the little darlings can run around screaming to their hearts content (as we discovered!)
We navigated the maze itself with relative ease and did not need to use the compass which you can buy on entry, just in case you get completely lost. In a separate area within the maize, we came across various illusions and mirrors which kept the kids in us, amused for a good half hour (See picture!)
Anyway, it was an interesting visit and as we left we said we would recommend for the kids, but for us to return it would have to be for a special event night, like Halloween or Bonfire Night. We’d probably skip nudist night though…
