carriagesWhat a surprise.  I was wondering where to eat tonight while I stayed at the Holiday Inn on Kings Cross Road in London and after having a swim in the newly refurbished leisure centre that sits beneath the hotel (fantastic decor) I plumped for the hotels own Carriages restaurant, not expecting much, but happy that I did not have to venture outside into the pouring London rain.

What a surprise it was to find the meal was simply excellent.  Things got off to a great start with my red onion tart for £4.95, which was served up on a rocket salad and accompanied with parmasan shavings.  Clearly cooked in this kitchen, it was beautifully presented and tasted wonderful.

For my main I opted for a fresh salmon fillet served up with salad leaves including dill and lemon at £14.95.  Again, I was amazed at the wonderful presentation and thought that had clearly gone into this dish.  It was wonderful.

I suppose my surprise came from the fact that hotel based restaurants are usually boring, poor quality and generally involve microwaved or fried food.  This hotel is the complete opposite.  I don’t know who their chef is, but s/he clearly cares about food.

Not thinking they could top my meal so far, I ordered up a desert for research purposes alone! Wow, what can I say; at only £4.95, my hazelnut cake accompanied by pistachio ice cream and a jellied custard, was brilliant.  Beatifully presented, it tasted great and was wonderful value for the price paid.

By the time I left and settled up my bill of £29! pounds, the restaurant was filling up fast.  I am not surprised.  What a gem!
