Looking for something to do to while away a few hours on a cold overcast day, we set off to the Yorkshire Air Museum in Elvington with my family who were visiting us for the weekend. We arrived at this old RAF base situated a couple of miles away from where we live and were amongst the first visitors to arrive as they opened up the gates on Saturday the 16th Jan. Having paid up at the gate (approx £5 each) we drove to the car park at the back the main hanger and made our way inside. With the winter weather in full swing, many of the exhibits that usually sit outside, were housed in this huge hanger and we spent the next hour or so walking around looking at the old air craft on display.
The site is quite large and houses many other displays and having finished in the hanger we walked over to the old control tower, where during the second world war, many a bombing mission was dispatched. The old wartime kit was still on display and it was interesting to see how those old control towers must have looked back in the 30′s and 40′s.
Having explored a few other war-time huts, each with their own different display (we particularly liked the french officers mess – much more stylish), we made our way to the Naffi for a cup of tea and a slice of cake. This was especially welcome given the wind and air outside was biting cold.
All in all we spent around four hours walking around this museum which was well laid out and very informative.
